Engineered roof plant platforms and screens, Adelaide

SA Construct is a cladding, roofing and facade contractor based in Beverley, Adelaide, founded in 2011 and a Master Builders SA award winner since 2014. Delivered with plant screens: Findon Technical College, all roofing and the roof-level plant screens.

A plant platform is a steel-framed deck on the roof that carries the mechanical and electrical plant, with its own walkways, guardrails and stairs or ladder. A plant screen is the louvre or perforated wall around it. We design, supply, install and certify both as part of the roof package for head contractors. Every platform leg and screen post goes through the roof, so one contractor drawing the roof, the platform and the flashings on one set of shop drawings keeps the roof whole.

How we build platforms

We build platforms as engineered modules at ground level and lift them into place, which keeps most of the work off the roof edge. The legs and their flashed feet are set out on our roof shop drawings before the sheet goes down, so they land on purlins or primary steel and the upstands suit the roof falls. The platform guardrail, the walkway to it and the roof access and safety system are designed as one.

What we deliver

  • Steel-framed platforms designed for the mechanical engineer's plant weights and the AS/NZS 1170.1 loads, certified by the structural engineer
  • Walkways, stairs, ladders and guardrails to AS 1657
  • Grating or sheet decking with kick plates
  • Louvre, perforated and expanded-metal plant screens on steel frames, designed for wind to AS/NZS 1170.2
  • Screen free area set to the mechanical engineer's airflow limits, and acoustic linings where the acoustic engineer needs them
  • Duct, pipe and cable tray penetrations flashed as part of our roof

Questions

FAQ

What standards apply to a roof plant platform?

AS 1657 covers the walkways, stairs, ladders and guardrails on and to the platform, and its scope includes permanent roof access for servicing rooftop equipment. The frame is designed for the plant weights and the AS/NZS 1170.1 imposed loads, and the wind on the plant and its screens comes from AS/NZS 1170.2.

Who designs the platform?

The mechanical engineer gives the plant weights, footprints and service clearances. The structural engineer designs and certifies the frame and the load path into the building. We draw the platform on the roof shop drawings so the legs, penetrations and flashings are fixed before the roof sheet goes down.

Can a screen hide rooftop plant without starving it of air?

Yes, if the screen is designed for the plant's airflow as well as its looks. Louvre or perforated panels are chosen for free area and pressure drop within the mechanical engineer's limits, and designed for wind like any cladding. Where noise limits apply, the acoustic engineer sets the lining or the screen height.

Why build the platform on the ground and lift it?

Building at ground level means the welding, bolting and decking happen at a bench with no fall risk. The roof crew then sets a finished module on legs that are already flashed, and the time spent working near the roof edge drops to the lift and the final fixing.

Price a plant platform package

Send the mechanical plant schedule, the roof plans and the acoustic report if there is one. If we are pricing the roof as well, say so and we will price both together.
